Why this book, now? After writing Am I Literate: Redefining Literacy in the Age of AI, dozens of young people reached out. We’ve discussed their challenges, how to make positive change, and where to find stable ground. This book is for them, and for all young people looking for guidance as they move into adulthood.

About the Book

Algorithm to Adulthood is a narrative non-fiction about stepping into adulthood (and what that even means!) in a world of constant disruption. This pivotal stage of transition, already demanding in ordinary times, is now being reshaped in profound ways by the rise of artificial intelligence and other technologies.

Drawing on personal anecdotes, candid conversations with young adults, and research, the book acts as a mentor to help anchor essential literacy foundations for navigating modern adulthood: Practical life skills, strengthening human skills in an AI world, and how to hustle for good (find purpose and make a difference).

First, the book will cover the literacy basics and how to use them in an AI world to build a solid foundation, protect your data, and navigate life essentials in the physical and digital spaces: how to make sure you have a roof over your head, food on the table, and money in the bank (and to responsibly invest!) – all areas which used to have step-by-step instructions, but now are being uprooted because of AI.

With practical life skills covered, it then explores AI literacy and the human strengths most needed today: curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, communication, community, and resilience. How is AI going to add value to my professional life? How will it impact my career? How do I build healthy relationships online and offline?

The book will then explore how to “hustle for good”—how to find purpose and change the world for the better. Questions around meaning, influencing policy, and making a difference for both people and planet. I’m a hustler myself, but I’ve learned sharp ninja skills from a few brilliant women who will also contribute to the book.
